Full-moon climbs

It’s increasingly popular to plan your climb of Kilimanjaro so that you climb to the summit around the time of  the full moon. Climbing on a cloudless evening, with the moonlight to guide you up final slopes to the crater rim, is a wonderful way to complete your ascent of Africa’s highest summit.

The chart below outlines the dates of the full moon and new moon (for the best star-gazing) to help you schedule your climb to ensure that you summit on the right date. The recommended start date for your climb will depend on your choice of route.

It is worth noting that the moonlight is very strong on the few days leading up to and following the full moon, so it’s not necessary to summit exactly on the night of the full moon.
